Before and After: Silver Plated Candle Holder

It is starting to warm up and lately I haven’t found squat either. But today I went to my new magic thrift store (the one I went to a couple weeks ago) and, again, was not disappointed. There were several things I could have walked out with, including this impressive light fixture:

Cross-stitched lampshadesCan you imagine how many hours of work went in to this?! And believe me, the box was big and overflowing with craftiness. I just couldn’t walk away without taking a picture.

But no, what I really purchased was this:

Candle Holder BeforeAt just $1.97, I knew I was taking it home immediately. It’s such a fun and funky shape. My son said, “Oooh what’s that? A sun?” when he got into the car. And as a bonus, I had a good idea how to spiff it up.

Candle Holder SuppliesI could tell by the finish and the tarnish on the finish it is silver plated, just like the flute I played from sixth grade clear through my freshman year of college. And long ago I bought a polishing cloth to polish my flute. While my flute never had this amount of tarnish, I knew it would work. You can purchase these at a jewelry store, music store, home improvement store or online for not a lot of cash. Just make sure and read the reviews that it won’t damage the finish, just remove the tarnish. I highly recommend the Selmer brand I have.

Once you’re ready to clean, put on some gloves if you want and rub in circular motions. I cleaned this heavily tarnished piece in about 45 minutes while I watched Iowa State get destroyed by Baylor in men’s basketball. Boo.

Here’s halfway. What a difference already.
