Before and After: The Living Room

It is crazy over here. This weekend my husband and I drove to the new house and I was overwhelmed at all the work that needs to be done and where all of our mid century furniture is going to go. We came home to boxes upon boxes and I’m thoroughly fed up with my collections. Why are there nesting dolls in every corner of the house? Curse all of the globes, picture frames, and lampshades. In other news, that didn’t keep me from going to citywide garage sales in my hometown.

Anyway, next up on our current house tour is our living room. When we first moved in it looked like a cave. Disclaimer: this is not our furniture but the previous owners’.

Living Room Before

The paint color was so, so dark it sucked the light out of everything. There were three doors going in to the room, and there were holes everywhere. Small ones, big ones you could put your fist through, you name it. But we were in love with the bookshelves, the wood floors and the general layout of the room. After much patching and painting, we progressed to this:

Living Room AfterGone is the weird doorway into the living room. Almost everything in here is pure vintage. Except for those little starbursts in the bookshelves; we made those with our mad modular origami skills.

There has been some debate on the couch in the back of the room. I absolutely love it and so does my husband. But it has been called some less flattering names. I’m sticking by it. What are your thoughts? Next up on Friday is the gray couch makeover. Prepare to be impressed with my upholsterer. I give him all the credit.

Thanks Debra. Can you believe the rug is from Pier 1? I bought it about five years ago on super clearance because each rug was really small…it’s two rugs pushed together!

Here is my opinion about the couch: Does the couch have legs? If so, get that fabric off the bottom and show off the legs of the piece. If the legs are ugly maybe see about some new ones. Other than that I love that piece.

Word of warning: My opinions are often crazy, impossible, and impulsive!

It does have legs. Just little brown ones that are decent. The skirting has light yellow detailing on it that makes me nervous to think about getting rid of it. But you’re right: the skirt totally makes it look dated. Maybe in the new house it will be ditched!

And crazy, impossible and impulsive opinions are the best ones 🙂
