Big Pink Phony

I’m just finishing up a week abroad and as soon as I can photograph all the finds I’ve jammed into a 17-foot truck, I’ll share what I’ve scored. I’ve been quite lucky this trip, but not every find can be a home run. This chair that I found just before I left is a great example.

When I saw this Pepto-abysmal chair for $10, I was hoping to get a steal on a designer chair. In the photos in the ad it bore an uncanny resemblance to these Lawrence Peabody chairs.

But when I went to check out the pink nightmare I realized it was a vintage knock-off. The chair weighs very little, suggesting it is made of pine or birch rather than walnut. Plus there’s one other significant tell, the arms.

The difference is subtle, but the arms of the Peabody chairs hang slightly over the front legs, mine do not. Fail. Still, the chair has a cool look so I think I can spruce it up a bit. I had planned to strip and refinish the wood, but now it doesn’t seem worth the work. Instead, some white lacquer and new fabric should give this phony its own identity.
