It’s All About the Tag(s)

Quite a few years ago I was at a tag sale with Austin and took the price tag off of a crazy 1970s harp. For some reason I thought this was a good purchase. But then I regretted even looking at the tag. A crazed gentleman walked into the house the sale was at and screamed, “Who has the tag to the harp?! Hey YOU!” Meaning me. He walked right up to me, got in my personal space bubble (which may or may not be larger than the average person’s), and stared at me. For a long time. I gave him the tag, ran to the car and locked the doors. Creepy.

That’s how one my first awkward moments at a tag sale played out. Here’s my second.

At a tag sale in my new town just down the street I was in the first five people to be let in. I took the tag off of this amazing floor lamp. $20! Later I saw the only two thrifting crowd people I know here and they were beaming at the lamp. I said something obnoxious such as, “I beat you!” when confusion set in. The lamp was priced not once, but twice. We both had a $20 price tag.

Lamp Overall

What next ensued was all of us trying to give the lamp to the other person. Ultimately I relinquished and took home the lamp. The awkwardness haunts it. I vowed my next cool lamp would go directly to their store. Check it out if you’re ever in Omaha. It’s called Hutch and the owners are seriously the nicest guys around. Maybe if enough of you visit, my lamp karma will be turned around.

Please tell me this has happened to someone else?

Do you mind my asking how or where you find out about all these magical tag sales? Maybe I live under a rock or something but I have NEVER been to one and really would like to check some out! Thanks!

Hi Tracy! No, you don’t live under a rock at all. We are constantly looking for them. Try your local Craigslist and search for “estate” or “tag sale.” Sometimes I find them in newspapers too. Your life will be changed! 🙂
