Private Stash: Christmas Salt and Pepper Shakers

A few weeks ago, at a Thursday morning tag sale, I snagged two Christmas salt and pepper shakers with original boxes. Well, my mom snagged them knowing I would love them. She knows me well. Somehow she made it to the room full of Christmas before me. I’m so glad she did! I never thought I would collect salt and pepper shakers, but I sure love the vintage Christmas themed figurines.

The original boxes are amazing and are both stamped “made in Japan” on the bottom. Mr. and Mrs. Snowman have Japan stickers and are, I believe, from the early 1960s. They belong with my favorite of the two boxes: the one with the reindeer, Christmas trees and snowmen—so cute. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus are from the 1950s. I love their expressions. Santa looks so jolly and priced at two dollars a set, I was also a happy sole. Thanks Mom!

Oooh, I love the box with the reindeer, too. I was born in 1968, but a lot of my friends’ families still had things like this in the mid 70’s, since Christmas decorations were not something people updated every year or two like they do now.
