Private Stash: Abstract Wooden Giraffe

To say that there are a few carved wooden animals around my house might be a bit of an understatement. It’s more like a miniature wooden safari in here. Whether it be packs of impalas in every imaginable size and stance, owls, frogs, turtles, birds or even a camel or shark, there are little wooden beasts lurking about furniture tops in every room of the house. My favorite of them all, and perhaps even a contender for one of my favorite things ever, is this highly stylized wooden giraffe. Of all my hand carved fauna, this little guy is the most abstract and modern. The marriage of elegant form and adorable subject matter makes me smile every time I walk by it. When I eyed him at a flea market from about 20 feet, I let out an audible gasp and took off running. When I found out he was only $2, I had to suppress a scream of jubilation.
