As a person who prides myself in my gift-finding abilities, I’ve always viewed gift cards as a default gift. It’s what you buy when you can’t think of anything really great or can’t ship what you really want to give. But I have to wonder if I’d feel the same way if modern gift cards had the same panache as this vintage gift medallion from the local department store, Younkers.
Forget plastic cards in flimsy paper envelopes. A gold coin presented in a velvet-lined brushed brass case—now that’s class. Angela actually presented me with this at a tag sale. She rooted it out and, knowing I have a weird fascination with department stores and their lore, placed it in my hand. As much as I absolutely love everything about it and its peacock-clad case, there’s a small part of me that wants to run out and use it. Adjusted for inflation, this should be worth about three times its face value in 2012 dollars.
