Private Stash: The Night Before Christmas

Our family does have a few Christmas traditions, and one of my favorites is pulling out our large box of vintage holiday books. Last year my son didn’t care too much about them. He’d sit and flip through them all. But this year he’s really excited and I read a few every day. His favorite has been a 1960 copy of The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Catherine Barnes.

I remember when I bought this book at a book sale, a lady spied it and said she had over 100 different versions of The Night Before Christmas! I’m happy with just this one. The illustrations are a glimpse into a different time.

The Night Before Christmas ReindeerThe colors are so rich and vibrant. Every page is fantastic.

The Night Before Christmas Living RoomThis is by far my favorite page. The decorations and toys are so cute. Maybe one year I’ll put actual stockings on the mantel. I’m sure it won’t look quite like this book.

Our copy is, let’s say, well loved. You can pick up a copy on eBay for around $20 and stash it in your vintage holiday book box. Everyone has one, right?

The 1947 Golden Christmas Book was a family favorite. One year my aunt had the pages scanned and made in to binders for all of us, which was nice since we have the content but looks clunky. Sadly, copies are now like $25-40 online!
