The Two Year Hunt

Does anybody else remember these? Of course you do, because it’s the greatest toy ever. At least I think so.

Spirograph Box

And one of the hardest toys to come by…for me. Oh sure, I could have gone to an antique store and bought one for $60, but to obtain my favorite childhood toy at full price isn’t how I roll. I searched for two years. Two! Finally Austin and I were at our wits end of a day full of garage sales and stopped at one last house. I sarcastically said, “Maybe this house will have a spirograph ha ha ha.” Of course it did. And for $4 it was mine. Not the best price, but after a two year drought I clutched it in my arms and took it home.

After looking for so many years it seems my Spirograph collection has multiplied like rabbits. I find them everywhere for amazing prices. At one time I had seven. Two were given away as gifts, one was a “parts” box that replaced boxes missing wheel #50, a couple sold off, and now I’m down to three extras of Kenner’s Spirograph Number 401. With the holidays approaching I’m going to look for others who have my love of methodically making patterns and who don’t get bored, because there’s “a million marvelous patterns.” Maybe they’ll get the best gift ever.

This Spirograph, number 401 was made in 1967. There’s also a Super Spirograph made in 1969 which is a lot harder to come by, and I’ve yet to see it.

Spirograph Inside

And the four pens that come with the Spirograph? Normally they’re trashed. Ink dried up and sticky all in the insides. I searched out the perfect pens for Spirographing, and what I found to be the best and most economical is the Fiskars pack of 48 acid-free gel pens. Some even have sparkles for my inner-child. Sold.

Spirograph Instruction Manual

I’d like to take credit for this fabulous design, but it came with the instruction booklet. The patterns I made all ended up with skipped gears and disrupted pen marks, to which I crumpled up the paper and threw wheel #50 across the room. That’s why it’s always missing…

Isn’t it funny that once you remember something the quest is on! Yes, I really hope it doesn’t take you near as long. Let us know when you find one! Good luck :)
