Weekend Finds: 1973 Schwinn Typhoon

bike 2

This weekend I snagged this 1973 Schwinn Typhoon boy’s bike. I purchased it around noon on Saturday at our very last stop. I recall saying to my sister and dad as were pulling up to the sale, “This sale has got to be better than that last sale.” Boy was I right! Not only did I get this bike, but we also found an old metal dairy milk crate. I didn’t have a chance to snap a photo of it before my sister hauled it home to her collection. The bicycle is in great shape and has wonderful original chippy white paint on it.

These pictures show the bike in its freshly picked condition. It needs a good cleaning and it will shimmer. The original paint is called Campus Green.

If you know me well you will not be surprised I asked about the history of the bike. I learned it had only one owner. The seller’s grandfather had bought it new in 1973 and took great care of it. It also has the owner’s registration plate mounted under the seat from Columbus, Nebraska, where he had lived. This plate will be staying on this bike!

The bike needs a little tune-up, but one of my favorite things about it is the quiet creaking sound it makes while riding it. It lets you know its been around for years. I may have bought this bicycle for my husband but that’s not going to keep me off of it.

Found you in a Google image search.

I had that bike. Forty-some years ago!

Rugged? A neighbor backed her care out her driveway and into me and my Typhoon. Neither of us were hurt. Brings back great memories just seeing the pix.

What a fun thing to be able to pass down to your lucky granddaughter. There is something so fun about riding on vintage bikes!
