This weekend my parents, husband and I went down to Kansas City to watch the Big XII Men’s Basketball Championship. We were rooting for the Iowa State Cyclones and let’s say we weren’t disappointed. On the way to the venue, the Sprint Center, this amazing mural caught my eye.
My husband was super antsy to get to the game but knew we would have to check out this mural by Arthur Kraft. I’m having trouble finding an exact date on the installation, but the mural received a Craftsmanship Award in 1960.
Arthur Kraft was a successful artist who lived in Kansas City, and produced several works across the United States. Some of his work was featured at the Louvre in Paris and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Apparently his best-known work is the “Court of the Penguins” in Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza. While I didn’t see this work in person, I can’t imagine it would be as amazing as the mural.
The colors are so varied and vibrant.
I had to take a picture of this, because my son’s favorite animal is the lemur and I was missing him pretty hardcore at this point in the trip.
Here’s the entire mural. Luckily we got there right at almost the perfect time. If you’re in Kansas City be sure to stop by in the evening at 12th and Oak.
