Weekend Finds: Rain Can’t Keep Us Down

Tammy and I set out on Saturday morning with our usual optimism, and we even thought since it was rainy it might deter other garage salers away. Little did we know the rain would deter the actual sales. Out of a list of about ten sales, only one was open. So at 9 we started going to antique shops and thrift stores north of the Des Moines area. Good choice of skipping out on garage sales; we found some great things.

Crewell VikingsOne of my first finds was this enormous crewel piece. It’s so hilarious in person, but it doesn’t fit in with my current collection of pastoral scenes. But even my husband said, “That’s great!” so its fate is undecided. I’m thinking about hanging it in our basement if I do decide to keep it. What do you think?

Valet's ChairA few weeks ago I bought a valet’s chair for $10, and have since reupholstered and only a few things remain before a great Before & After post. I had been looking for one for quite some time. Once you find one they start popping up everywhere. Then I found this chair. It’s seen some better days. Some of the wood is chipped and faded, and the caps are missing on the feet. I’m thinking about reupholstering it, but we’ll see. The list of project pieces in my garage is a little…overwhelming!

Midcentury Beauty Lamp   Painted Travesty Lamp

Can you believe the first lamp, complete with fiberglass shade, was only $4 at a thrift store? Neither can I. Just a little cleanup is all that’s needed. The second one I think was a pity buy. It was only $1, but someone had painted that crazy design on with acrylic paint. Luckily it scrapes off pretty easily, but like I said, the project pieces are piling up!

Candy DishesThese little candy dishes are so sweet together. So when I play bridge (ok, a card game called pepper) with my friends, the nuts and butter mints will feel right at home.

Hand Colored Moth Print

My favorite find of the day has got to be this hand-colored print from a German scientific book. I love moths and butterflies, so this was right up my alley. Good thing Tammy’s sister pointed us to this booth specifically, or we might have ran out of time and not found it.
Hand Colored Moth Print DetailYou can see in this closeup where the artist got a little outside the lines. Each one is individually painted. The booth’s owner was there and said she found the book at an antique book sale and paid $500 for it. There were so many beautiful prints. This one is going in a vintage frame and will hang in my living room somewhere for sure.

Be sure to check us out on facebook if you haven’t already. We’ll be updating it with our posts, as well as some candid shots, exclusive articles, and asking your opinions on our finds. See you over there!

I think the viking piece would look super cute in a little boy’s room/nursery! The colors are perfect for it and what a great way to combine the nautical theme with the ever-popular Scandinavian design.

Oh that’s true! I didn’t even think about a nursery, as my little guy is quickly transitioning to a bigger boy look. Good call 🙂
